To kick off your baking adventure, the first step is to prepare your baking pan. For this recipe, a 9x13-inch pan works perfectly. Start by lining the bottom and sides of your pan with parchment paper. This not only makes for easy removal of the blondies but also helps in achieving a beautifully baked edge. After lining it, lightly grease the parchment paper with a little butter or non-stick spray. This extra step ensures that your blondies can be lifted out cleanly without any sticking, allowing for perfect squares when you slice them.

Ingredients

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter

1 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup finely chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans recommended)

1/4 cup pure maple syrup

Sea salt flakes (for sprinkling)

Instructions

Prepare your baking pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8x8 inch baking dish with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal later, and lightly grease with butter or cooking spray.

Brown the butter: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the butter foams and begins to turn a golden brown color and develops a nutty aroma (about 5-7 minutes). Be careful not to burn it! Once browned, remove it from heat and let it cool for a few minutes.

Mix sugars and butter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the browned butter with the packed brown sugar and granulated sugar. Whisk until smooth and well combined.

Add eggs and vanilla: Incorporate the eggs one at a time, whisking well after each addition. Then add the vanilla extract and mix until fully integrated.

Combine dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Mix dry ingredients into the wet: Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, stirring just until combined. Be careful not to overmix.

Add maple syrup and nuts: Gently fold in the maple syrup and the chopped nuts until evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Pour into the prepared pan: Spread the blondie batter evenly in the prepared baking dish. For an extra touch, sprinkle a few flakes of sea salt on top for flavor contrast.

Bake: Place in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter).

Cool and slice: Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Carefully pull the blondies out using the parchment overhang and let them cool completely on a wire rack. Once cooled, slice into squares and serve.
